Ruins of this Mansion overlook Lake Eufaula
The ruins of the Moulthrop family mansion in Eufaula Alabama.
This old home sits high on a bluff overlooking Lake Eufaula. In the 1830’s the Shorter Family lived on the property and the Shorter Cemetery is still there. In 1899 the property was sold and the Molthrop home was built. This was the Moulthrop families’ third home built at the far end of Riverside Drive on the former Shorter Family Property. The house was known locally as “Longview” and built in the Queen Anne style of architecture. It was designed by John Adams and built from bricks made be the R. Moulthrop & sons Brick Company. The mansion was surrounded by a gristmill, and two other large buildings used for storage and a garage.
When I was there the grass was so high I couldn’t find the cemetery but it was such a beautiful setting with deer foraging along the outskirts of the property. The home and 25 acres has since been purchased by an LLC group with ties to the family. They are planning to restore the mansion.
I can’t wait to visit downtown Eufaula again. It’s such a pretty place with many historic houses representing different styles of architecture.
